Three years later, the Cleveland Cavaliers selected Ilgauskas with the 20th overall pick in the 1996 NBA draft.
His early tenure with the Cavaliers was marred by injuries, and until the team drafted the phenomenal LeBron James in the 2003 season, he barely played on the court. Ilgauskas stayed healthy for the next few seasons and received a five-year, $55 million extension. He remained with the Cavaliers until he was traded to the Washington Wizards in early 2010. Days later, the Wizards made Ilgauskas a free agent, and he signed a one-year deal with the Cavaliers. After the season, he signed a one-year, $1.3 million deal with the Miami Heat to play alongside James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh. Despite appearing in the championship game, the Heat lost and Ilgauskas retired after the season. In early 2011, he accepted the Cavaliers assistant general manager position.
