Mehta is the Lifetime Music Director of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra. He is also Principal Conductor of the Valencia Opera and Principal Conductor of the Maggio Musicale Festival in Florence, Italy.
He studied music in Vienna at the age of 18. Mehta is a permanent resident of the United States and has retained his Indian citizenship. He conducted his first conducting in Vienna in 1958 and won the Liverpool International Conducting Competition in the same year. He was also appointed Assistant Conductor of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic and then Music Director of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra. Mehta was Music Director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic from 1962 to 1978. From 1978 to 1991, he was Music Director and Principal Conductor of the New York Philharmonic. Mehta became the tenured music director of the Israel Philharmonic in 1981. He has received many national honors, and in 2006, he was honored by the Kennedy Center.
