Zaha Mohamed Hadid is an Iraqi-British architect and Pritzker Architecture Prize winner. She was born on October 31, 1950, in Baghdad, Iraq, to Wajiha and Mohammed. She grew up in one of the earliest Bauhaus-style buildings in Baghdad. Hadid studied mathematics at the American University of Beirut. In 1972 she moved to London to continue her education at the Architectural Society School of Architecture. Her fourth-year student design project was for a hotel on Hungerford Bridge in London.

After graduating in 1977, Hadid worked in the Metropolitan Architecture Office. In 1980, she opened her own office in London and entered various design competitions. Her first major win was designing for The Peak Club in Hong Kong in 1983. Although she won the top prize, the design never materialized. She is known for her futuristic designs depicting multiple perspective points and fragmented geometry.
Hadid’s first major project was the “Vitra Fire Station” in 1994. Other popular works include Bergisel Ski Jump (2002), Rosenthal Center for Contemporary Art (2003), MAXXI – National Museum of 21st Century Art (1998-2010) and Evelyn Grace Institute (2006-10). Hadid won the Stirling Prize again in 2010 and 2011. She won the RIBA Gold Award in 2015.
