John Black, nicknamed “The Beast”, is a Jamaican sprinter and Olympic gold medalist. He has one of the fastest times in the 100m and 200m sprints, second only to Usain Bolt. Blake was born on December 26, 1989, to parents Shirley and Veda in St. James, Jamaica. He has a sister named Arlene. Blake completed his education at St. Jago High School in Spanish Town.

Before his track and field career, Black was an aspiring cricketer. His high school principal encouraged him to pursue sprinting. Black made his teenage career debut in 2006. He won a total of 5 gold medals at the Junior CARIFTA Games, 3 gold medals at the CAC Junior Championships and a gold medal at the 2006 World Junior Championships. He also set a junior record of 10.11 seconds in the 100 meters at the 2007 Caribbean Free Trade Association Games. Black’s career was halted in 2009 when he tested positive for methylhexylamine. He was banned from competing for three months.

In 2011, Black competed in the 100m and 4x100m relays at the World Championships in South Korea and won gold medals. He was able to improve his 200m personal best from 19.78 seconds in 2010 to an impressive 19.26 seconds in 2011. Blake made his Olympic debut at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. He won gold in the 4x100m relay and silver in the 100m and 200m sprint. Black will represent Jamaica at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
