After dropping out in 8th grade, he started playing baseball with the local American Army team. In 1942, the St. Louis Cardinals offered Yogi and his childhood friend Joe Garagiola a minor league contract. The only problem is that Joe’s contract comes with a $500 bonus, while Yogi’s contract comes with a $250 bonus. Feeling slighted, Yogi rejects the contract. He was quickly drafted by the New York Yankees, who offered to match Galagiola’s $500 bonus from the Cardinals. After returning from the war, he played for the Newark Bears until he was called up to the major leagues in 1946. He went on to become one of the most successful players and coaches in baseball history. During his time with the New York Yankees, he was an 18-time All-Star (15 consecutive All-Star selections). He also won 13 World Series titles as a player and manager (10 as a player and 3 as a manager). He is one of only four players to have won the AL MVP three times and five times, and his Yankees number has been retired. His highest salary as a player was the $61,000 he received in 1961. That’s the same as about $520,000 today after adjusting for inflation. Yogi Berra passed away on September 22, 2015 at the age of 90.
