Gotti was born on May 19, 1981 in Memphis, Tennessee, his original name is Mario Sentell Giden Mims. He grew up in the Ridgecrest apartment in the Frayser neighborhood of Memphis. His father is a sports coach from Zimbabwe and his mother is of South African descent. Yo Gotti grew up surrounded by crime. When he was in third grade, federal agents raided his home. Some of his family members were arrested and eventually sentenced to up to 15 years in prison.
At a very young age, Gotti started smoking, drinking, and stealing; however, after realizing that the path he took would only lead him to jail, he decided to focus on success. By the age of 14, he would rap, perform and release music under the leadership of Lil Yo.

Between 2000 and 2006, Yo Gotti began to release albums under his new name. The album includes “From Da Dope Game 2”, “Da Rap Game”, “Self-Explanatory”, “Life” and “Back 2 da Basics”. Then, in 2012, after signing with the major record label RCA, he released his sixth album “Live From The Kitchen”. The album’s first single “5 Star” peaked at 79 on the Top 100 Singles Chart and 11 on the American Rap Chart. The album itself ranked 12,200 copies on the U.S. Billboard and sold 16,000 copies in the first week.
