Yelawolf is an American rapper, singer/songwriter and record producer from Gadsden, Alabama. His complete projects include Radioactive (2011), Love Story (2015) and Trial by Fire (2017). Other notable projects include the mix tape Trunk Muzik 0-60 (2010) and Psycho White (2012) in collaboration with Travis Barker. Yelawolf is the head of the independent record company “Slumerican”. He is currently signed to Interscope Records and Eminem’s Shady Records.
His name is Michael Wayne Atha and he was born on December 30, 1979 in Gadsden, Alabama. His mother Sheila was 16 when she gave birth. After growing up, the family wandered around and lived in different cities. Atha spent part of his childhood in Antioch, Tennessee, where he attended Carter Lawrence Elementary School in Nashville. By the time he graduated from high school, he had been to more than 10 different schools. Atha’s early musical influences include Run-DMC, Outkast and Dungeon Family.

In 2005, Yelawolf and Missy Elliott entered the spotlight as contestants in UPN’s “Road to Stars”. His first album CreekWater was released in June 2005. He also self-released his first mixtape Pissin’ in a Barrel of Beez (2005). The rise of Yelawolf earned him a recording contract with Columbia Records. His first single on the label is called “Kickin”. Soon after, he was removed from the label. Not bothered by Colombia’s decision, Yella Wolff returned to the underground scene. “Radioactive” is Yelawolf’s second studio album, released in November 2011 by Shady, DGC and Interscope Records. It ranks No. 4 on the top rap album charts, including songs such as “Hard White (Up in the Club)” and “Let’s Roll”. The project features cameos by Lil Jon, Mystikal, Kid Rock and others. In 2012, Yelawolf and Ed Sheeran released EP’The Slumdon Bridge’, and Travis Barker released’Psycho White’. In 2013, he and Hopsin participated in the “F*ck It” tour held in Phoenix, Arizona from November 14th to November 23rd in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Yelawolf founded his own hip-hop record company “Slumerican” in 2012. Current members include DJ Paul and Three 6 Mafia. Their first project, Black Fall (2013), was released as a free download. Yelawolf’s third album Love Story was released in April 2015. It ranks third in the Billboard 200, has obtained the gold certification, and sold more than 100,000 copies. This album was supported by Eminem’s singles “Box Chevy V”, “Till It’s Gone”, “Whisky in a Bottle” and “Best Friend”. His non-album single “Out of Control” with Travis Barker was released in 2016.
Yelawolf’s fourth album “Trial by Fire” premiered in October 2017 and was exclusively produced by him. Album sales were very low, only 12,000 copies were sold in the first week. His fifth album Trunk Muzik 3 was released in March 2019. This marked his last album on Shady Records. Trunk Muzik 3 is supported by the songs “TM3” and “Catfish Billy 2”. Guest appearances by Machine Gun Kelly and DJ Paul in the track “Rowdy”. According to reports, the sixth studio album titled “Ghetto Cowboy” is in production.
