Yankee Papa is an award-winning Puerto Rican singer/songwriter, rapper and music producer. He is known as the “King of Reggae Music” and is famous for his collaborations with Luis Fonsi such as “Gasolina”, “Rompe” and “Despacito”. His recordings include studio albums Barrio Fino (2004) and El Cartel: The Big Boss (2007). The Yankees were born on February 3, 1977 in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico, under the original name Ramon Luis Ayala Rodriguez. His parents are Rosa Rodriguez and Ramon Ayala. He has two brothers, Normar and Melvin. Yankee holds an associate degree in accounting. He initially wanted to play baseball and even tried it for the Seattle Mariners. After being injured in a gang firefight, his dream was shattered.

Yankee Daddy has been singing/rhyming since he was 13 years old. A few years later, he appeared in DJ Playero’s Mixtape, Playero 37 (1992). His first studio album No Mercy was released by White Lion Records in April 1995. The production was in charge of DJ Playero and Nico Canada. Yankee founded his own independent label “El Cartel Records” in 1997. He subsequently released the compilations El Cartel (1997) and El Cartel II (2001). His second complete album, El Cangri.com, was released in June 2002. It produced 6 singles and ranked 13th on the Latin Pop Albums Chart. The production is in charge of DJ Blass. It is ranked 9th on the Billboard 200 ranking and number one on the Billboard Top Rap Albums ranking. It was supported by the singles “Impacto” and “Ella Me Levanto”. The album also invited American artists Akon, Nicole Scherzinger, will.i.am and Fergie. Yankee’s other projects include Mundial (2010) and Prestige (2012). He won the “Industry Leadership Award” at the 2016 Latin Billboard Awards. In 2017, he co-produced the single “La Rompe Corazones” with Ozuna, “Vuelve” with Bad Bunny, and co-produced the single “Boom Boom” with RedOne, French Montana and Dinah Jane.
Yankee collaborated with Luis Fonsi to create the monster single “Despacito” released in January 2017. This song has topped the charts in many countries/regions and has won multiple Latin Grammy Awards, including “Song of the Year” and “Record of the Year”. The official video is one of the most viewed videos on YouTube, with more than 4.7 billion views, and it’s still increasing. Yankee is currently working on his seventh album El Disco Duro. In addition to music, he also starred in the movies “Vampire” (2004) and “Bario Genius” (2008).
