William Joseph Schallert is Actors of America, union activist and past president of the Screen Actors Guild. He is best known for the ABC sitcom Patty Duke Show. Shalet was born on July 6, 1922 in Los Angeles, California. His father, Edwin, is a drama editor for the Los Angeles Times, and his mother, Elsa, is a fanzine writer. Schallert attended a seminary during high school and then attended the University of Southern California. He also studied and lectured at Oxford University.

Schallert discovered his love of acting while attending UCLA. He was one of the founders of the Amphitheatre in 1946. Sharrett began his acting career in the 1940s and held a number of roles. He had an under-the-radar role as a Philadelphia banker in the 1947 film Harrow’s Fox. Other early film appearances include Reckless Hour (1949), The Man from Planet X (1951) and Doris Wear’s Pillow Talk (1959). Recent films include The Teacher (1984), Innerspace (1987) and Shake, Rattle and Rock! (1994) with Renee Zellweger.
Shalet is probably best known for his roles on television. From 1958 to 1961 he appeared at Dick Powell’s Zane Gray Theatre. He has guest appearances in Gunsmoke, The Partridge Family and Steve Caynon. From 1963 to 1966, Schallert played the father role of “Martin Lane” on The Patty Duke Show. He played the character “Leander Pomfritt,” Dobie Gillis’ many loves, in the first three seasons of the sitcom. Another memorable role was “Neilz Barris” in 1967’s Star Trek. Other TV shows include Get Smart, Perry Mason and The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries. His last TV appearance was in the 2014 episode of 2 Broke Girls.
Schallert was the president of the Screen Actors Guild from 1979 to 1981. He founded the Disabled Performance Council and was awarded the Ralph Morgan Award in 1993.
