early life
Will Arnett was born on May 4, 1970 in Toronto, Canada, to Edith and Emerson James Arnett. After high school, Will attended Lakefield College School in Lakefield, Ontario, but was asked to leave after a semester because he was a troublemaker. He dropped out of Concordia University in Montreal and moved to New York in 1990 to attend the Lee Strasberg School of Theater and Film. As a teenager, Arnett pursued an acting career with the encouragement of her mother. He auditioned for commercials about acting and developed a love for acting.
Profession
He landed his first screen role in Felicity Huffman’s independent film called “Erie.” He started performing in several shows that were not picked up by the network or were canceled after a few episodes. In 1996, he filmed his first TV pilot for CBS with Kevin Pollak and Lucy Webb, but was not selected. A few years later, he was on another pilot on NBC’s “The Mike O’Malley Show,” but it was canceled after just two episodes. In 2000, Arnett had the darkest year of his life, saying he “drinked those years” in response to not getting any jobs. In the summer of 2000, a friend helped Will out of his drinking problem. Two years later, he finally landed a role (“Still Standing”) in a series that would hold up, but his role was canceled after the first episode. After his fourth failed pilot, Arnett decided he was going to swear all pilots forever…until he was persuaded to audition for the “Arrested Development” pilot.
In 2003, Arnett won the role of George Oscar “Gob” Bluth II on the Fox comedy series Arrested Development. In 2006, he received his first Emmy nomination for his role as Gob. The show was canceled after just three seasons due to poor ratings, though it garnered overwhelmingly positive reviews and a massive cult following. In a nod to his character Gob Bluth’s penchant for using European “Last Countdowns” in magic shows, he played magician Max on “Sesame Street.” His exposure in Arrested Development led to several larger roles in feature films. In 2006, he had his first leading role in Let’s Go to Prison, directed by Bob Odenkirk. On a budget of $4 million, the film surpassed box office receipts and more than $13 million in rentals. Next up was “Blade of Glory,” where he and his then-wife Amy Poehler starred as a skating brother/sister who had an incestuous relationship. The film was No. 1 in its first two weeks, earning $118 million during its theatrical release.
Arnett also made guest appearances on the TV shows “King of the Hill” and “30 Rock” for which he was nominated for four Emmy Awards for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series. He landed supporting roles in the films “Spring Breakdown,” “Hot Rod,” “The Comebacks” and “On Broadway.” In “Solomon Brothers”, Arnett again worked with Oden Kirk. In his second film with Will Ferrell, he played Lou Redwood in the basketball comedy Semi-Pro. On November 17, 2009, it was announced that Arnett would attempt to win his real-life wife, Amy Poehler, live on an episode of the hit comedy series “Parks and Recreation”. Arnett plays Chris, an MRI technician, who may have an interest in Poehler’s Leslie Knope, and Justin Theroux appears in the same episode as another suitor. Arnett signed on for an episode, titled “The Set Up”, which aired in January 2010.

He next appeared in the documentaries “Mansome”, “The Millers” (which ran for two seasons) and 2016’s “Flake.” In 2017, he played Mr. Mire in the Netflix comedy series A Series of Mishaps.
His distinctive deep, husky voice has earned him multiple placements in CBS promos, trailers, and commercials. During his career, he has also voiced several characters in animated films, including in The Lego Movie Parts I and II. From 2014 to 2020, he voiced several characters in “Bojack Horseman.” He has voiced numerous characters in TV and video games, including “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2” and “Lead Eater: The Return of Matt Hazzard.” Starting in the summer of 2020, he hosts a podcast called “Smartless” with Sean Hayes and Jason Bateman.
