Wilfrido Vargas Net Worth: Wilfrido Vargas is a Dominican Republic bandleader, trumpeter, singer, arranger, composer and producer who has a net worth of $2 million. Wilfriedo Vargas was born on April 24, 1949 in Altamira, Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic. He is credited with playing a major role in turning Merengue into a worldwide phenomenon.
His father was accordionist and guitarist Ramón Vargas and his mother was flutist and guitarist Bienvenida. He began his music studies at an early age, attending the Municipal Conservatory of Music at the age of 10. Before the age of 12, he was a trumpet soloist and conductor of a small local band. In his twenties, however, he achieved commercial and critical success. His band Los Beduinos produced their first album Wilfrido Vargas y sus Beduinos in 1974 on Karen’s label. This is the first of 17 albums Vargas recorded with Karen. Half of the first album was written by pianist and composer Sonny Ovalle, who helped develop the sound of Los Beduinos and later contributed significantly to Vargas’ hit albums in the ’80s. Vargas’ first big hit was his fourth album Punto y Aparte! (1978). It produced the hit single El Barbarazoí and helped spark the global Merengue craze, providing exposure for many Dominican artists. In 1987, he switched to Sonotone Records and produced five albums with them, including a 1989 Grammy-nominated animation. He has been with the Rodven brand since 1991, and while he remains a mainstay in Merengue, he can no longer achieve the fame he enjoyed in the 80s. Vargas also made a major contribution to the Fania All-Star team, joining their historic performance in Cuba in 1979 and contributing to the recording of the All-Star team’s Habana Jam album. Today, Vargas is one of the most famous artists in Latin America.
