Wilbur Ross is an American billionaire investor and former banker. Known as the “King of Bankruptcy”, he is known for working with failing companies. He was elected as the 39th United States Secretary of Commerce in February 2017. Wilbur Louis Ross, Jr. was born on November 28, 1937 in Weehawken, New Jersey. His father, Wilbur Sr., was a lawyer and his mother, Agnes is an educator. Ross attended Xavier High School in Manhattan, New York. He received a BA in English Literature from Yale University in 1959. Ross received his MBA from Harvard Business School in 1961. He currently serves on the advisory board of the Yale School of Management.

Ross began his career in 1976 at Rothschild’s New York City office. He led the company’s bankruptcy practice for more than 20 years. He represented Donald Trump in the 1980s when his Atlantic City casino faced foreclosure. Ross started his own investment firm, WL Ross & Co., in 2000. The company makes money by investing in struggling businesses. WL Ross & Co. was sold to Invesco in 2006 for approximately $375 million. Ross remains chairman and chief strategy officer of the company.
Ross founded International Steel in 2002 and sold it to Mittal Steel in 2005 for $4.5 billion in cash and stock. He is also the founder of the International Textile Group, a North Carolina-based fabric company. The company was sold to Platinum Equity in 2016. Other companies Ross founded include International Auto Parts Group (IAC) and International Coal Group (ICG). ICG was sold to Arch Coal in 2011 for $3.4 billion.
Ross is a former member of the Democratic Party. He became a registered Republican in late 2016. Ross was nominated by President Donald Trump in November 2016 to be Secretary of Commerce. He was sworn in on February 28, 2017, succeeding billionaire businesswoman Penny Pritzker.
