David Chang was born on August 5, 1977 in Vienna, Virginia, to Korean parents. He immigrated to the United States in the 1960s. His father was Korean and his mother was Korean. His parents were the owners of golf supplies warehouses and owned several restaurants, but the young David never showed an interest in cooking, instead majoring in religious studies at Trinity College in Connecticut.

The beginning of a career
After graduation, he did some odd jobs, including teaching English in Japan and working as a waiter in several restaurants. In 2000, he started studying at the French Culinary Institute, which has been renamed the International Culinary Center. During his studies, David worked at Mercer Kitchen in Manhattan, then moved to Tokyo, Japan to work at the Park Hyatt Hotel in Tokyo. His next career transfer was to return to the United States, and found a job at Café Boulud in Manhattan, where he honed his skills for a while before deciding to open his own restaurant.

David Chang opened his first restaurant-Baifu Noodle Restaurant in East Village in 2004, and opened another one two years later-Baifu Ssam Bar, which is only a few blocks from the first store, and opened again in 2008 Had another Baifu noodle restaurant, this time Momofuku Ko, which is a 12-seater restaurant.
