Walther Moreira Salles, son of João Moreira Salles, founder of Casa Bancária Moreira Salles (Moreira Salles Banking House) in Pocos de Caldas, is considered one of the pioneers of modern Brazilian banking and finance.
Born May 28, 1912 in Pouso Alegre, Minas Gerais, Brazil, he became a partner of the bank in 1933 at the age of 21. About seven years later, the bank merged three regional banks and later changed its name to União de Bancos Brasileiros (Unibanco). Ultimately, the bank has become one of the three largest banking institutions in Brazil. Walther Moreira Salles worked at Unibanco for 60 years, eventually retiring as chairman of the bank in 1991. Until his death in 2001, he was married three times and had four children, Pedro, Walter, Joao and Fernando Moreira Sales. His son Pedro Moreira Salles is now the current president of Unibanco.
