Walter Cronkite is an American broadcast journalist and news anchor. He was an anchor for the CBS Evening News (1962-81) for 19 years. Cronkite was born to parents Helen and Walter Cronkite on November 4, 1916, in St. Joseph, Missouri. His father was a dentist. Cronkite was an only child. He spent his early childhood in Kansas City, Missouri, before moving to Houston, Texas in 1927. He attended San Jacinto High School and studied political science at the University of Texas at Austin. In 1935, he dropped out before completing his degree.
Profession
Cronkite worked for the Daily Texas student newspaper while at the University of Texas. After college, he worked briefly at the Houston Post. In 1935, he took a job as a WKY radio announcer in Oklahoma City. Cronkite joined the Associated Press in 1937 as news editor. He was later promoted to overseas war correspondent. Cronkite covered events such as World War II, the Battle of the Bulge, and the Nuremberg Trials. He also served as the agency’s lead Moscow correspondent from 1946 to 1948.
In 1950, Cronkite was hired as a correspondent by Edward R. Murrow of CBS. He hosts CBS shows, You’re There, The Morning Show, Twentieth Century and People of the Week. Cronkite was named host of the CBS Evening News in 1962. He held that position until his retirement in 1981. During his 19-year tenure, Cronkite covered events such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, the Apollo 11 moon landing, the Vietnam War, and Watergate. In 1981, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Jimmy Carter. His autobiography, A Journalist’s Life, was published in 1996.

Walter Cronkite died on July 17, 2009 at the age of 92. The cause of his death was reported to be cerebrovascular disease. He was cremated and his body was buried at Mount Moriah Cemetery in Kansas City, Missouri. Cronkite was married to advertising writer “Mary Elizabeth Maxwell” in 1940 until her death in 2005. They have three children, Nancy, Casey and Walter III.
