Walter Becker is an American guitarist, bassist, songwriter, and music producer. He is the co-founder of the jazz rock band Steely Dan. They are known for albums such as Aja (1977) and Two Against Nature (2000). His solo recordings include 11 Tracks of Whack (1994) and Circus Money (2008). Walter Karl Becker was born on February 20, 1950 in Queens, New York. His parents separated when he was very young. He was raised by his father and grandmother. Becker spent his early years in Queens before moving to Scarsdale in Westchester County. He attended Stevenson High School, then Bard College.

Becker took guitar lessons from blues guitarist Randy Wolfe. Before that, he mainly played the saxophone. He met future music partner Donald Fagan while attending Bard College. The duo formed and performed in early bands like the Leather Canary. They moved to Brooklyn, New York in 1969 to work as songwriters. Two years later, the duo moved to California to form Steely Dan. The original members of the band included Denny Dias, Jeff “Skunk” Baxter and Jim Hodder. Becker has served as Steely Dan’s songwriter, guitarist, and bassist. They released 9 studio albums and 2 live albums from 1972 to 2003. Their best-selling album “Aja” was released by ABC Records in September 1977. It has sold millions of copies and is certified 2x Platinum in the US and Canada. Other albums include Can’t Buy a Thrill (1972), Pretzel Logic (1974), The Royal Scam (1976) and Everything Must Go (2003). Their eighth album, Two Against Nature (2000), won 4 Grammy Awards, including one for Album of the Year.
Becker focused primarily on music production from 1981 to 1993. He has produced albums for the likes of Rickie Lee Jones, Fra Lippo Lippi, Michael Franks and China Crisis. Becker’s solo studio album 11 Tracks of Whack was released in September 1994. It was co-produced by his longtime friend Donald Fagen. His second solo album Circus Money was released in June 2008. Becker was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001 as a member of Steely Dan. He was inducted into the Long Island Music Hall of Fame in 2008.
