Vybz Kartel is a host, songwriter, music producer and entrepreneur from Jamaica. He specializes in the dance hall/reggae music genre. His outstanding singles include “Ramping Shop”, “Dancehall Hero” and “Clarks”, including Popcaan and Vanessa Bling. He is known for albums such as Up 2 Di Time (2003), The Teacher’s Back (2008), Pon Di Gaza 2.0 (2010) and King of the Dancehall (2016). Kartel was born in Kingston, Jamaica on January 7, 1976, his original name is Adidja Azim Palmer. His mother’s name is Teresa Palmer. He has several siblings, including a younger sister named Maureen. Cartel grew up in the Watford district of Portmore, St. Catherine. He attended Calabar High School in Kingston.

Adidja started writing lyrics at the age of 11. He adopted the stage name “Adi Banton” to pay tribute to Buju Banton. He released his first single “Love Fat Women” in 1993 when he was 12 years old. Palmer formed the short-lived group “Vibes Cartel” in the mid-1990s. Soon after the band disbanded, he started using “Vybz Kartel”. Kartel gained early exposure as a protégé of the bounty killer. During his tenure, he wrote several songs for bounty killers and other members of the league. He also writes for organizations such as Elephant and Scare Dem Crew. Kartel’s first studio album Up 2 Di Time was released by Greensleeves Records in October 2003. It produced songs such as “Badman Party” and “Sweet to the Belly”. His second album Timeless was released in February 2004. Several other projects followed, including JMT (2005), The Teacher’s Back (2008) and Most Wanted (2009). The album Pon Di Gaza 2.0 (2010) was released by Kartel’s Adidjahiem Records. It is led by the hit single “Ramping Shop” with Spice as the protagonist. The official video has been viewed more than 13 million times. Kartel collaborated with Dre Skull to produce the album Kingston Story (2011). His most recent projects include Reggae Love Songs (2014), Vikings (Vybz Is King) (2015) and King of Ballroom (2016). The latter is ranked 2nd in Billboard Reggae Charts. Kartel has worked with artists such as Shawn Storm, Beenie Man, Aidonia, Wayne Marshall, Jay Z, Rihanna and Major Lazer. On the other hand, he has enemies with Bounty Killer and Mavado.
In addition to music, Kartel is also a businessman, entrepreneur and writer. His businesses include Street Vybz rum, Daggering Condoms, Addi’s Shoes and Cake Soap brands. He created and starred in the reality show “Chacha Pets”. He founded the “Portmore Empire” in 2007. Kartel’s book “The Voice of Jamaican Slums: Imprisoned but Not Silent” was published in July 2012.
