Vladimir Putin is a Russian politician and current President of Russia. He served as president from 2000 to 2008 and was re-elected for a third time in 2012. Putin was born to parents Maria and Vladimir the Elder on October 7, 1952 in Leningrad, Russia. He has two siblings, Victor and Albert. Putin studied German in high school and was active in sports. He graduated from St. Petersburg State University in 1975 with a degree in International Law.
Profession
Before entering politics, Putin worked as an intelligence officer at the KGB. He was stationed in East Germany from 1985 to 1990, and retired the following year with the rank of lieutenant colonel. From 1990 to 1996, Putin served in the St. Petersburg government under Anatoly Sobchak. He advises on foreign investment, international affairs and relations. He also served as Sobchak’s vice-chairman for two years. Putin moved to Moscow in 1996 and joined Boris Yeltsin’s presidential government in 1998. He was Director of the Federal Security Service (1998-99) and later Secretary of the Security Council (1999).
Putin succeeds Boris Yeltsin as president of Russia. He served two consecutive terms as president from 2000 to 2008. During his presidency, Putin was able to continuously develop the Russian economy. He also made a historic visit to Israel in 2005, the first by a Kremlin leader. Putin was prime minister of Russia from 2008 to 2012 under Medvedev. He was elected for a third presidential term in 2012.
