Vilmos Zsigmond is a Hungarian-born cinematographer and Oscar winner. According to a 2003 survey, he was named the world’s top cinematographer. Zsigmond was born on June 16, 1930 in Szeged, Hungary. He studied at the Budapest Academy of Theatre and Film, where he obtained a master’s degree in cinematography. He and László Kovács documented the 1956 Hungarian Revolution before fleeing to Austria and the United States. He started making low-budget films in the 1960s, but rose to prominence in the 1970s after being hired by film director Robert Altman. Sigmund is known for films such as “Encounters of the Third Kind,” “The Long Farewell,” and “Stalin.” He co-founded the Film Academy Global Film Academy in 2012. He is married to Elizabeth Foz and has two children. Vilmos Zsigmond passed away on January 1, 2016 at the age of 85. He died of various diseases.
