Victoria Wood is an English stand-up comedian, actress and singer. She is a screenwriter and director, best known for the sketch series Victoria Wood on TV. Wood was born to parents Stanley and Nellie on May 19, 1953 in Prestwich, Lancashire. She has three siblings, Chris, Penny and Rosalind. She attended Bury Girls’ Grammar School at the University of Birmingham. She graduated in 1974 with a degree in theatre.

Wood started playing the piano at the age of 15. She is a member of the Rochdale Youth Theatre Studio. Wood entered and won the talent show New Faces in 1974. She was a musical guest on the BBC1 series “This Is Life!” from 1976 to 1979. In 1978, Wood produced her first play “Genius” with “Julie Walters”. “Genius” was later adopted by television. Other dramas include Almost a Happy Ending and Happy After Meeting You. Wood and Walters have also worked on several other projects, including the 2009 BBC One special Victoria Wood’s Mid-Year Christmas.
Wood moved to the BBC in 1984. Her own sketch comedy series Victoria Wood on TV premiered on BBC Two the following year. The show ran for two seasons from 1985 to 1987. Wood wrote and starred in the 1994 TV movie Pat and Margaret. In 1998, she released her first sitcom, Dinner Girls. The series ran for 16 episodes on BBC One. Wood found success with the 2006 TV movie The 49-Year-Old Housewife. She won a BAFTA Award for Best Actress for her role as Nella Last. The film also won a BAFTA Award for Best Screenplay.
