Espinosa won the Kentucky Derby three times. He won the derby for the first time in 2002 riding the War Emblem. He also won the Kentucky Derby and the 2015 American Pharoah on a California Chrome in 2014 and 2015. Espinosa won two Preakness Stakes riding a war badge in 2002 and 2014. His first breakthrough came in 2000 when he won the Breeders’ Cup Distaff Riding Spain. In 2013, he celebrated his 3,000th career win at Belfair Hollywood Park. In 2014, Espinosa was ranked No. 8 on the national jockey earning list. He donates 10% of his winnings to City of Hope for pediatric cancer research. After winning the Triple Crown, he donated 100% of his earnings to the City of Hope. Espinosa won the ESPY Best Jockey Award in 2002 and 2014. In July 2018, Victor was injured while riding a horse named Bobby Abu Dhabi in Del Mar, California. His fractured vertebrae made it difficult for him to walk, shave or even get out of bed.
