Verne Gagne was born in Robbinsdale, Minnesota in February 1926. He owns and promotes the American Wrestling Association. Gagne is a 16-time World Heavyweight Champion, including 10 AWA World Heavyweight Champions and 5 World Heavyweight Champions.
Gagne still holds the record for the longest joint reign as world champion. He is third for having the longest single world title. Gagne has been inducted into the WWE, WCW and Pro Wrestling Hall of Fame. He won two NCAA championships at the University of Minnesota and was a reserve member of the USA Freestyle wrestling team at the 1948 Olympics. Wrestlers he trains include his sons Greg Gagne, Ric Flair, Ricky Steamboat, Curt Hennig, Bob Backlund and The Iron Chief. Gagne was selected by the Chicago Bears in the 1947 NFL draft, but he did not play in the NFL. Gagne killed a man in 2009 but has not been criminally charged with dementia. Verne Gagne died on April 27, 2015 at the age of 89.
