Umberto Eco was an Italian writer, educator, semiotician and philosopher. He is best known for novels such as The Name of the Rose, Foucault’s Pendulum, and The Island of the Day Before. He was born to Giovanna Bisio and Giulio Eco on January 5, 1932 in Alessandria, Italy. Eco is 5 feet 10 inches tall. He studied philosophy and literature at the University of Turin, and in 1954 received his degree in Laurea.

Eco started his career as an editor at Radiotelevisione Italiana, the Italian national broadcaster. His first book, The Aesthetics of Thomas Aquinas, was published in 1956. His second book, The Development of Medieval Aesthetics, was published three years later. He was a lecturer at the University of Turin (1961-1964) and a professor at the University of Bologna (1975-2007). Eco has received honorary degrees from several universities including Indiana University Bloomington, Rutgers University and the University of Belgrade. He became an honorary member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1998 and received the UCLA Medal in 2005.
