Ty Pennington is an American TV host, reality show star, carpenter and designer. He is a master of home decoration, as can be seen in the shows “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition”, “Thai’s British Adventure” and “Trade Space”. Pennington was born Gary Tygert Burton on October 19, 1964 in Atlanta, Georgia. He was raised by his mother Yvonne, a child psychologist. He has an older brother named Winn. Pennington attended Kennesaw College, followed by the Atlanta College of Art. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in commercial arts.

Before TV, Pennington worked as a model and carpenter. He appeared in advertising and printing work for companies such as Levi’s, J. Crew, Sprite, and Diet Coke. In 1995, he participated in the setting of the romantic drama “Leaving Las Vegas”. Pennington was selected by The Learning Channel (TLC) for their popular series “Trading Space”. From 2000 to 2003, he worked as a creative carpenter on the show, and again in 2007.
Pennington gained further recognition as the host of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. The show was broadcast on ABC from December 2003 to December 2012, a total of 9 seasons. His performance won him two Emmy Awards for Outstanding Reality Show. Pennington starred in “Tae Pennington’s Great Britain Adventure (2008-10)”. He co-hosted the lifestyle talk show The Revolution (2012) with Tim Gunn and Harley Pasternak. His TV works also include “American Dinner Renaissance”, “On the Menu” and “A Growing America”.
Pennington’s first book Ty’s Tricks: Home Repair Secrets Plus is a cheap and simple project to transform any room. It was published in 2003 by Hyperion Books. In 2008, Simon & Schuster published the second publication “Excellent Design Can Change Your Life: Beautiful Rooms, Inspiring Stories”. Pennington also tried his own furniture collection, hardwood floors, fabrics, bedding, bathroom and home accessories. He has a quarterly magazine called Ty Pennington at Home.
