Tulsi Gabbard is an American politician, Democrat and member of the United States House of Representatives from Hawaii’s 2nd District. She was born on April 12, 1981, in Lailo Aloa, American Samoa, to parents Carroll and Mike Gabbard. She has four siblings, Bhakti, Jay, Narayan and Vrindavan. Gabbard grew up in Honolulu, Hawaii, where she attended Hawaii Pacific University. She graduated in 2009 with a BA in International Business. Gabbard co-founded the Healthy Hawaii Coalition (HHC) as a teenager. HHC is a non-profit organization that teaches children about environmental protection and stewardship.

Gabbard was elected to the Hawaii House of Representatives in 2002. She represented the 42nd district from 2002 through 2004. At age 21, she became the youngest woman ever elected to the Hawaii state legislature. Gabbard joined the Hawaii Army National Guard in 2003, and voluntarily deployed to Iraq in July 2004. She served 12 months in Anaconda, Iraq’s logistics support area. She has received numerous honors, including the Medal of Merit, the Army Commendation Medal, and the Army Achievement Medal. Gabbard was commissioned as a second lieutenant with the 29th Brigade Combat Team in 2007. She was promoted from Captain to Major on 12 October 2015.
In 2010, Gabbard was elected to the Honolulu City Council for the 6th district. She served from January 2011 to August 2012. Gabbard defeated Republican Kawika Crowley in November 2012 for a second congressional district seat. She was sworn in on January 3, 2013. She works in the Armed Forces and the Foreign Affairs Council. She was re-elected for a second term in 2014, followed by a third term in 2016. Gabbard served as the 2016 Democratic National Committee vice chair. She resigned in February 2016 in support of Senator Bernie Sanders’ run for the Democratic presidential nomination.
On January 11, 2019, Gabbard announced her intention to run as a Democrat for the 2020 U.S. presidency. Other candidates seeking the Democratic nomination include Julian Castro, John Delaney and Richard Ojeda.
