Buddy Holly suggested that Lopez and his band The Big Beats go to New Mexico-based producer Normal Petty.

Petty signed the band to Columbia Records. In 1963, Lopez left the band to go single and released his debut album Trini Lopez on PJ’s in 1963. Lopez would go on to release more than 30 albums. He has a number of singles charts in the US and UK, including “If I Had a Hammer”, “Kansas City”, “Michael”, “Lemon Tree (Will Holt song)”, “Are You Sincere”, “Sinner Man”, “I’m Going Home, Cindy”, “La Bamba Pt. 1”, “Now Without You”, “Thornbush”, “Malaguena Salerosa” and “A Closer”. “If I Had a Hammer” was the number one hit from his first album in 36 different countries. In 1964, Lopez was invited to design guitars for the Gibson Guitar Corporation. In addition to singing, Lopez also starred in the films The Dirty Dozen, The Phynx and Antonio. He also appeared in episodes of the television series Adam-12 and The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries.
