He moved to Chicago at the age of 20 and worked for the Steppenwolf Theater Company for 11 years. Letts is a founding member of Bang Bang Spontaneous Theatre.

As a writer, Letts wrote the plays “The Bug,” “Killer Joe,” and “August: Osage County,” for which he later wrote the screenplay. He’s been on stage since 1988, most recently in his second round Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? The Realistic Joneses in 2012 and 2014. As a screen actor, Letts is best known for his role as Andrew Lockhart in the 2013-2014 TV series Homeland. He also starred in the movie “The American Marshal” and appeared in episodes of the TV series Home Improvement, Early Edition, Seinfeld, The Drew Kelly Show and Prison Break. Letts was nominated for a Screen Actors Guild nomination for his role in Homeland in 2014, and in August won the Writers Guild of America Award for Best Adapted Screenplay: Osage County. He also won the 2008 Pulitzer Prize for Drama August: Osage County and a Tony Award for playing George in Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf.
