Torbjorn Tornqvist made his fortune as a co-founder of the Gunvor Group, one of the world’s largest commodity groups. The global oil trader is said to have generated $93 billion in revenue in 2012 and continues to benefit from its diversified assets including refineries, pipelines, terminals and mining operations.
To date, Gunvor Group operates in 35 countries and is considered the fourth largest commodity trader in the world after Vitol, Glencore and Trafigura. Torbjorn Tornqvist started working at BP shortly after graduating from Stockholm University in 1977. Following his stints at Scandinavian Trading Co. and Intermaritime Group Petrotrade, he decided to set up Gunvor’s predecessor company in Estonia in 1997. Its main business is the export of Russian crude oil. In 2000, he co-founded Gunvor with Russian billionaire Gennady Timchenko. Before Timchenko was sanctioned by the U.S. Treasury, he acquired a partner’s 43 percent stake in the company.
