He was the offensive line coach at the University of New Haven from 1984 to 1987 and the offensive line coach at Boston University in 1988. He remained in Boston from 1989 to 1993 and served as the offensive coordinator. Spallano returned to college from 1994 to 1998, where he was the head coach at New Haven. He joined the NFL in 1999 as an offensive quality control coach for the Cleveland Browns. He was promoted to Cleveland’s offensive line coach in 2000. Spallano was the tight end coach for the 2001 Washington Redskins and the 2002 Jacksonville Jaguars. He also served as the Dallas Cowboys’ tight end coach from 2003 to 2004 and then as the Cowboys’ offensive line coach and running game coordinator from 2005 to 2005. Spallano became Dallas’ assistant head coach in 2007. and offensive line coaches. He got his first NFL head coaching job with the Miami Dolphins from 2008 to 2011. In 2012, he became the offensive coordinator for the New York Jets. Spallano joined the Oakland Raiders in 2013 as an assistant head coach and offensive line coach. After Dennis Allen was fired in 2014, he became the interim head coach. In 2015, he became the 49ers’ tight end coach, and from 2016 to 2018, he became the Vikings’ offensive line coach. He’s the only NFL head coach to lead a one-win team to next year’s playoffs, and the second head coach to come back in 10 games. Tragically, he passed away on July 22, 2018 at the age of 56.
