Tony Jacklin was born in Scunthorpe, Lincolnshire, England in 1944 and became a professional golfer in the early 1960s. He won his first title at the British Open in 1969, becoming the first man from England in nearly two decades.
Then he won the U.S. Open in 1970, becoming the only European player to win the U.S. Open in 84 years. He won eight European Tour titles in the 1970s and early 1980s, and played for the British and Irish Ryder Cup teams from 1967 to 1977 and the European team in 1979. Jacklin became the most successful Captain’s Cup team in European Ryder history, leading the team to its first victory in nearly 30 years in the mid-’90s. In 2002, he was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame, and he retired two years later. During his career, he completed 28 career wins. Jacklin was married twice, marrying his first wife Vivian in 1966. They had three children together before she died of a brain hemorrhage in her early 40s in early 1988.
