Tony Conrad is an experimental filmmaker, avant-garde artist, musician and educator. He was born Anthony Schmalz Conrad on March 7, 1940 in Concord, New Hampshire. He was the first child of Arthur Conrad and Mary Parfit. He grew up in Baltimore and majored in mathematics at Harvard in 1962.
Profession
Conrad worked briefly as a computer programmer after visiting Copenhagen in 1960. In the early 1960s, he moved to New York and started working on structured films. His first experimental film, Blink, was released in 1965. The film is 30 minutes long and consists of just five different frames. Other notable films include Straight and Narrow (1970), Upcoming Attractions (1970), Four Squares (1971) and the Porn Movies series (1973). Conrad was a professor at Antioch College in the seventies. He also teaches in the Department of Media Studies at the University at Buffalo.
As a musician, Conrad is known for being proficient on the violin. He was a member of the 1960s music group Eternal Music Theatre. He made drone music with avant-garde composer “La Monte Young” and a few others. One of Conrad’s early works was “Four Violins” in 1964. His first musical work was “Outside the Dream Syndicate (1972)” with the German krautrock band Faust. After a long hiatus, the follow-up “Slap on Pythagoras” was released in 1995. Other releases include Early Minimalism Volume 1 (1997) and Magical Glide (2003).

Tony Conrad passed away on April 9, 2016 at the age of 76. He was battling prostate cancer, but his immediate cause of death was pneumonia. He was living in a hospice in Cheektowaga, New York, at the time of his death. Conrad was married twice. His first wife was “Beverly Grant” and his second wife was “Beverly Grant”. He is survived by his second wife, his son Theodore and two grandchildren.
