Tony Bennett is an American singer, songwriter and former painter. He is known for hits such as “I leave my heart in San Francisco” and “Rags to Riches”. Bennett was born on August 3, 1926 in Queens, New York, his original name was Anthony Dominick Benedetto (Anthony Dominick Benedetto). His late mother Anna was a tailor and his father John was a grocer. He has two siblings, little John and Mary. Bennett attended the Arts and Crafts High School in Manhattan, New York. He studied music and painting, but dropped out before completing his degree. During World War II, he also served as an infantry rifleman in the US Army.

Bennett grew up listening to the voices of Al Jolson, Judy Garland and Bing Crosby. In 1949, actress Pearl Bailey (Pearl Bailey) first spotted him. He later attracted the attention of comedian Bob Hope. Bennett signed with Columbia Records in 1950 and released his first hit single “Because of You” the following year. Other early tracks include “Cold, Cold Heart”, “Blue Velvet” and “Rags to Riches”.
Bennett’s first studio album “Because of You” was released in September 1952. He subsequently released albums such as The Beat of My Heart (1957) and Basie Swings, Bennett Sings (1959). Bennett’s iconic song “I Left My Heart in San Francisco” was composed in 1953 and released in 1962. It was issued as side B of “Once Upon a Time”. This song is ranked 19th on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. He won two Grammy Awards, one for “Record of the Year” and the other for “Best Male Solo Performance.”
Bennett ended his working relationship with Columbia Records in the early 1970s. Then he tried his own record company Improv, but with little success. Bennett made a comeback in the heyday of the rock music era in the late 1980s. He re-signed with Colombia in 1986 and released the album “Excellent Art”. Other albums include Perfectly Frank (1992), Steppin’ Out (1993), Duets: An American Classic (2006) and Duets II (2011). The collaboration album Cheek to Cheek between Bennett and Lady Gaga was released in 2014 by Interscope Records and Columbia. It has sold more than 700,000 copies in the United States and has received RIAA gold certification.
In addition to music, Bennett is also known for his love of art. Many of his paintings can be found in the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Bennett founded the Frank Sinatra School of Art in 2001 in his hometown of Astoria, Queens, New York. Bennett (2012).
