Tommy Chong is a Canadian-American actor, director, comedian, musician and cannabis activist. He is a member of the comedy duo Cheech & Chong. His acting credits include “Smoky” (1978), “After Hours” (1985) and the sitcom “The ’70s Show.” Chong was born Thomas B. Kin Chong on May 24, 1938 in Edmonton, Canada. His mother Lorna was a waitress and his father Stanley was a truck driver. He grew up in Calgary, Alberta, and attended Crescent Heights High School.

Chong started his guitar career in the 1960s. He played for the rhythm and blues band “The Shades”, which was later renamed “Bobby Taylor and the Vancouvers”. Their hit “Does Your Mama Know About Me” peaked at number 29 on the Billboard Hot 100. Chong met Cheech Marin in 1969 and they later formed the comedy duo “Cheech & Chong”. Their self-titled debut album was recorded and released in 1971. It was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Comedy Recording. Other albums include Big Bambu (1972), Los Cochinos (1973) and Sleeping Beauty (1976).
Cheech & Chong released their first full-length film “Up in Smoke” in 1978. It is directed and produced by Lou Adler. Their second film, Cheech & Chong’s next film (1980), was released by Universal Studios. It grossed $41 million at the box office. Their other major films include “Beautiful Dreams” (1981), “Everything Got Hard” (1982) and “Still Smoke” (1983).
Chong wrote, directed and starred in the comedy film Far Out Man (1990). His film credits also include After Hours (1985) with Rosanna Arquette, National Lampoon’s Senior Trip (1995) with Matt Frewer and Half Baked (1998) with Dave Chappelle. He voiced the character “Yax” in the animated film Zootopia (2016). Chong played “Leo Chingkwake” on the Fox sitcom That 70s Show. The series ran for eight seasons from August 1998 to May 2006.

In 1975 he married his second wife, actress “Shelby Fiddis”. The couple have three children, Paris, Gilbran and Precious. Chong revealed in June 2012 that he had been battling prostate cancer. He also revealed in 2015 that he had been diagnosed with colorectal cancer.
Chong is a marijuana activist. He is a member of the Advisory Board of the National Organization for the Reform of Cannabis Laws (NORML). He is also a regular contributor to the online magazine Cannabis Culture.
