He and his brother Dick started playing folk music together. Not sure if they were musically strong enough to make it a career, they started adding comedy to their musical sets. In the early ’60s, he began cameo and recurring television appearances, and in 1965, “The Choking Brothers Show” began airing. It went on for a season before the two put out “The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour.” The show was popular, but became increasingly political during its run, and was abruptly canceled in 1969.
