He played for the University of Vermont from 1993 to 1997. Thomas was selected by the Quebec Nordics with the 217th overall pick in the 1994 NHL draft.

Thomas played in the minor leagues and Europe until finally signing with the Boston Bruins in 2005. The goalie also played for the Florida Panthers and Dallas Stars in the National Hockey League. He won the Wizina Award twice for being the league’s best goalie. Thomas represented Team USA at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics, winning a silver medal. He won a bronze medal for the United States at the 1996 World Championships. He won the Stanley Cup with the Boston Bruins in 2011. He won the 2011 Stanley Cup Playoffs MVP, becoming the oldest player in league history at age 37. In 2011, he won the ESPY Award for Best NHL Player. Thomas holds the record for most saves by a goalie in a playoff and Stanley Cup final series. Because of his political beliefs, he was the only Bruin who did not attend the 2012 White House visit.
