Hunter played for the Calgary Flames, Quebec Nordics, Vancouver Canucks and San Jose Sharks during his career from 1981 to 1997. He won the Stanley Cup with the Flames in 1989 and became known as an elite enforcer for his fierce style of play. Hunter became an assistant coach for the Washington Capitals in 1997, a position he held until 2002. He was an assistant coach for the San Jose Sharks from 2002 to 2008 and then an assistant coach for the Toronto Maple Leafs from 2008 to 2011. He went back to being an assistant coach in Washington from 2012 to 2013 and became the head coach of the Western Hockey League Moose Jaw Warriors in 2014. Hunter holds the Calgary Flames career records for longest free throw attempts, longest free throw attempts in a single season, and longest free throw attempts in a playoff year.
