Kaplan has built a fortune in the financial sector, best known as Chairman and CEO of The Electrum Group LLC, a New York City-based investment, advisory and asset management firm focused on the natural resources sector.
He was born Thomas S. Kaplan in New York City in 1962 and grew up in Florida. He studied at Oxford University, where he received his BA, MA and PhD in History. In 1991, he started working for Israeli investor Avi Tiomkin as a junior partner before starting his own business. Initially, he worked as an advisor to hedge funds, specializing in strategic forecasting of financial markets. In 2003, he established Apex Silver Mines Ltd, which focuses on metal fundamentals. While working for the company, he financed one of the largest silver and zinc mines in the world, the San Cristobal deposit in Bolivia. In 2004, he retired from the company, leaving behind more than $1 billion. Meanwhile, in 2003, Thomas Kaplan co-founded Leor Exploration & Production LLC, primarily focused on oil and gas exploration in the United States. A few years later, he sold his assets in the company for $2.55 billion. During the same period, he invested in a metals mining company, Africa Platinum Plc, which eventually brought him $580. In addition to the above, Kaplan serves on a number of boards in various capacities. He is Chairman of NovaGold Resources Inc. and Executive Chairman of the charitable organization Panthera Corporation. He has served as Chairman of the Board of Electrum Ltd, Chairman of the Board of Directors and Director of Golden Minerals Company. He has also served as a director of NovaCopper Inc and TechnoServe. His love for wildlife conservation led him to found the Orianne Society and he also supports a number of wildlife conservation organisations.
