Two careers
Shortly after “Sixteen”, Tzuyu made her debut in the extended broadcast (EP) “Story Begins”, which included the lead single “Like Ohh-Ahh”. The group quickly broke into the K-pop stage, and their song was the first K-pop premiere to reach 100 million views. The following year, according to the annual music survey conducted by Gallup Korea, she became one of the most popular idols among Koreans, and her singing ability and natural beauty attracted a lot of reports.
Twice’s single “Cheer Up” became the best performing single of 2016, topping the Gaon digital chart and winning multiple awards. The single “TT” in their EP “Twicecoaster: Lane 1” topped the charts for four weeks, and EP also became the best-selling album of the year. They released the compilation “#Twice” for Japanese fans, which became the first Korean girl group album to be platinum certified.
Some of their recent projects include EP “Feel Special” and their second Japanese album “&Twice”.
Flag dispute
When Twice appeared in the Korean variety show “My Little TV”, all members of the group held their national flags. She is holding the national flags of Taiwan and South Korea. This led many mainland Chinese supporters to criticize her as a Taiwan independence activist, and JYP quickly apologized to the Chinese audience. She also had to apologize to everyone who was offended.
Many Taiwanese politicians went to support her statement and should not be too extreme. Taiwan has a national flag, and she said that her country is not wrong. One of the reasons it has become such a big problem is because China wants to unify all “independent” Chinese countries under one banner.
As a result, JYP’s stock fell from a 52-week high, and their website was attacked by anonymous hackers, temporarily preventing their service from running. The company has announced that its employees will receive additional cultural sensitivity training, especially when it comes to political issues between countries.
