Owens was selected by the San Francisco 49ers with the 89th overall pick in the 1996 NFL draft. He played eight seasons with the 49ers from 1996 to 2003. His first professional game was against the New Orleans Saints and his first touchdown was against the Cincinnati Bengals. From 2000 to 2002, he was named to the first-team All-NBA team three times in a row. He also played in five Pro Bowls from 200 to 2004. Owens signed with the Philadelphia Eagles as an unrestricted free agent in 2004. He was released the following year. He played for the Dallas Cowboys from 2006 to 2008. Other teams he played for include the Buffalo Bills, the Cincinnati Bengals and the Allen Wranglers. He briefly signed with the Seattle Seahawks in 2012. Owens has 15,934 career receiving yards, 153 touchdowns and 1,078 catches. He was named to the NFL Second Team of the 2000s.
In addition to football, Owens has appeared in various TV shows, movies and commercials. He starred in his reality series The TO Show on VH1. It ran for 3 seasons from July 2009 to October 2011.
