Terrence Pegula, aka Terry Pegula, was born in Carbondale, Pennsylvania, and graduated from Penn State University with a bachelor’s degree in engineering, but he majored in mathematics when he started school.
He started working for Getty Oil as soon as he graduated and then went independent. He first achieved success in 1983 when he founded East Resources, a natural gas drilling company. In 2000, he also acquired Pennzoil Assets. In 2010, he sold East Resources to Royal Dutch Shell for $4.7 billion. He then used a portion of his funds to buy the Buffalo Sabers NHL and Buffalo Bandits hockey teams for $189 million. He also donated $88 million to Penn State to help them build the new Pegula Ice Arena and $12 million to Houghton University’s Kerr-Pegula Sports Complex. On September 9, 2014, it was announced that a group of investors led by Terry had won the right to acquire the Buffalo Bills NFL franchise for $1.4 billion. Terry’s team defeated bids from a team led by Jon Bon Jovi and another led by Donald Trump.
