Terrence Newman was born in Salina, Kansas in 1978 and played college football in his hometown with the Kansas State University Wildcats. Newman was unanimously named to the All-American team in 2002, the same year he was named a Big 12 All-NBA First Team and received the Jim Thorpe Award, which is awarded annually to the best defensive back in college football.
The Dallas Cowboys selected Newman with the fifth overall pick in the first round of the 2003 NFL Draft. He went on to play for Dallas for nearly a decade before joining the Cincinnati Bengals in 2012. As of the fall of 2014, Newman remained with the Bengals. He was a two-time professional bowler in 2007 and 2009. By the end of the 2013 season, he had amassed 669 career tackles, along with two quarterback sacks, 36 interceptions and three touchdowns. The 5-foot-10, 197-pound cornerback was also a successful track and field athlete in college. He won the Big 12 outdoor 100-meter sprint again in 2001 and 2002; he also won the indoor 60-meter sprint.
