Republican politician Ted Cruz is a junior U.S. senator from Texas. He was a candidate for the 2016 presidential campaign. Cruz was born Rafael Edward Cruz on December 22, 1970 in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. His father, Rafael, was a Cuban immigrant, and his mother, Eleanor, was born in the United States. Cruz attended Faith West College, followed by Second Baptist High School in Texas. He graduated high school in 1988 as a valedictorian. He is a member of the Free Market Education Foundation and an excellent public speaker. Cruz continued his studies at Princeton University, followed by Harvard Law School. He received his bachelor’s degree from Princeton University in 1992 and his Juris Doctor degree from Harvard University in 1995.

After graduation, Cruz worked as a legal assistant to J. Michael Luttig and later William Rehnquist. He then spent a year at Cooper & Kirk, LLC before joining the George W. Bush presidential campaign in 1999 as a policy advisor. Cruz became Director of Policy Planning at the Federal Trade Commission in 2001. He was later named Solitary General, a position he held for five years beginning in 2003. He was the first Hispanic attorney in Texas and the youngest attorney to hold the position.
Cruz defeated Democratic candidate Paul Sadler in the November 2012 general election. He took office on January 3, 2013. He was the first Hispanic American to serve as a Senator from Texas. Cruz delivered a 21-hour Senate speech in 2013 against President Barack Obama’s health care plan. He tried to persuade his colleagues to cut funding for the project. Cruz first announced his candidacy for president in March 2015. He defeated fellow Republicans Donald Trump and Marco Rubio in the Iowa caucus in February 2016. Cruz dropped out of the presidential race in May 2016 after losing the Indiana Republican primary to Donald Trump.
