Tavis Smiley is an American talk show host, political commentator and writer. He has worked with multiple networks including PBS, BET, ABC and CNN. His host works include “The Tavis Smiley Show”, “BET Tonight with Tavis Smiley” and “Smiley & West”. Smiley was born on September 13, 1964 in Gulfport, Mississippi. His biological mother was Joyce Mary Roberts, and his stepfather was Emery Garnell Smiley. The family moved to Bunker Hill, Indiana, where he attended Maconaquah High School. Smiley studied public affairs at Indiana University Bloomington. He completed his bachelor’s degree in 2003. He is also a member of the Kappa Alpha Psi Brotherhood.

From 1988 to 1990, Smiley served as an assistant to the then mayor of Los Angeles, Tom Bradley. Bradley was the first African-American to serve as the mayor of Los Angeles. In 1991, Smiley ran for a seat on the Los Angeles City Council, but was unsuccessful. His first radio performance was as a commentator in the “Smile Report” of KGFJ Radio. In 1996, he became a political commentator on the “Tom Joyner Morning Show.” He held this position until 2008. Smalley served as the host of “Bet Tonight with Tavis Smalley” from 1988 to 2001. He hosted the “Tavis Smile Show” on National Television Public Radio (NPR) from 2001 to 2004.

From 2004 to 2017, Smiley hosted his radio talk show “The Tavis Smiley Show” on PRI. The TV version of the show was aired on PBS for 9 seasons (2004-15). He hosted the radio talk show “Smile and West” (2010-13) with the philosopher Cornel West. The smiling face appeared in the documentary “Still Bill” (2009) starring Bill Withers. He is a contestant for the 19th season of ABC Dancing with the Stars. His film works include Ethan Hawke’s Sinister (2012) and the documentary Stand (2009). Over the years, Smiley has won multiple NAACP image awards. In 2009, he was named one of the most influential people in the world by Time magazine. In 2014, his star was included on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Smiley has written several books, including Doing the Right (2000), Keeping Belief (2002), Affirmation I Know (2006), Failure (2011) and 50 For Your Future: Lessons for the Future (2016). He is The non-fiction book “The Covenant with Black Americans” (2006) contributed. He co-authored “The Rich and the Rest of Us” (2012) with Cornel West, and “Before You Judge Me” with David Ritz ( 2016).
