Susan Rice is an American public official and foreign policy analyst. She served as the 24th National Security Adviser and the 27th US Ambassador to the United Nations. Susan Elizabeth Rice was born on November 17, 1964, in Washington, D.C., her parents, Emmett and Louis, separated when she was 10 years old. She has a brother named John. Rice attended National Cathedral School, where she served as Student Council President and Oratory Representative. She received a BA in History from Stanford University in 1986. She completed her master’s and doctoral degrees. He received his PhD in International Relations from New College, Oxford University in 1988 and 1990 respectively.

Rice served as a foreign policy aide to politician Michael Dukakis during the 1988 presidential campaign. From 1990 to 1993, she was an international management consultant at McKinsey & Company. Rice began serving in the Clinton administration in 1993. She was Director of International Organizations and Peacekeeping at the National Security Council from 1993 to 1995. From 1995 to 1997, she served as Assistant to President Bill Clinton and as Senior Director for African Affairs.
Rice was appointed Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs in October 1997. Madeleine Albright recommended her for the position. During her tenure, she served as chief diplomat for African affairs during the 1998 terrorist bombings in Tanzania and Kenya. Rice was a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution from 2002 to 2009. She served as a senior national security adviser during Obama’s “Change for America” presidential campaign. Rice served as the 27th United States Ambassador to the United Nations from January 2009 to June 2013. She was elected National Security Advisor under President Barack Obama. She held this position from July 2013 to January 2017.
