Susan B. Anthony was an American abolitionist, educational reformer, feminist, civil rights and women’s rights activist. She played a vital role in gaining women’s legal right to vote in the United States. Susan Brownell Anthony was born on February 15, 1820 in Adams, Massachusetts. Her parents are Lucy Reed and Daniel Anthony. She has 6 siblings including Daniel, Hannah, Mary and Merritt. Anthony grew up in a Quaker family. She attended a Quaker boarding school in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In the mid-1840s, the family moved to Rochester, New York.
Profession
In 1846, Anthony moved to Cana Johari to serve as the head of the Women’s Department at Cana Johari College. She held the position for two years. Anthony met Elizabeth Cady Stanton at an anti-slavery conference in 1851. The two share similar interests and become lifelong friends. They co-founded the Women’s Temperance Society of New York State in 1852, the National League of Women’s Loyalty in 1863, the American Equal Rights Association in 1866, and the National Women’s Suffrage Association in 1869. Slavery and women’s right to own property.
Anthony and Stanton founded and published the women’s rights newspaper Revolution in 1868. The publication ran from January 1868 to February 1872. Anthony was arrested and convicted in 1872 for illegally voting in Rochester, New York. She was charged $100, but she never paid the fine. Anthony’s dream came true in 1920, when the 19th Amendment to the US Constitution gave women the right to vote. Her portrait was added to the dollar coin by the U.S. Treasury Department in 1979.
