As the owner of Econet Wireless, which he founded in 1993, Strive Masiyiwa earned his net worth. For Masiyiwa, building Econet was no easy task. He fought a landmark legal battle with the Zimbabwean government for five years, and as a result, Econet didn’t come online until 1998.
Today, Econet is the largest telecommunications company in Zimbabwe, with operations in Kenya and Burundi. In addition to launching Econet, Masiyiwa also co-owns the Carbon War Room with British entrepreneur Richard Branson, an international non-profit that helps entrepreneurs come up with solutions to climate change.
