Early life and career start
Stockard Channing was born Susan Williams Antonia Stockard on February 13, 1944 in New York City. Her mother is Mary and her father is Leicester. She had an older sister named Leslie who later became the mayor of Palm Beach, Florida. When he was young, Channing attended Chapin School in New York, and then at the all-girls Madeira School in McLean, Virginia. She then attended Radcliffe College at Harvard University, where she studied literature and history. Channing graduated with honors in 1965 and continued to receive performance training at HB Studio in New York.
Channing started her acting career in Boston’s Experimental Theater Company. In 1969, she performed with the band in Elaine May’s play “Adaptation/Next”. Channing was subsequently in the revival of “arsenic and old lace”. In 1971, she made her Broadway debut in the rock musical “Two Gentlemen of Verona” based on Shakespeare’s comedy of the same name.

Next, in 1970, she married Paul Schmidt, professor of Slavic languages, and divorced in 1976. Then Channing married writer and producer David Durbin from 1976 to 1980. She was married to her fourth husband, businessman David Rolle, from 1980 to 1988. Since then, Channing has established a long-term partnership with photographer Daniel Gillham; the two have been together from 1990 until Gillham’s death in 2014. Channing has no children.
