Steven Lento was born on November 22, 1950 in Winthrop, Massachusetts. Although he first grew up in a family of Italian descent, his mother remarried a man named William Brewster Van Zandt. As a result, Steven became Steven Van Zandt following his stepfather’s name. At the age of seven, Steven moved to New Jersey with his family.
Van Zandt learned how to play guitar at a very young age. He was inspired by the early performances of the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. At the age of 14, he formed his own band called Whirlwind. Although this band was short, he formed another band a year later, named Mates, and joined the third band Shadows in 1966. During this period, Steven was sent home because of his long hair. Although his mother needed some persuasiveness, he eventually returned to school and graduated in 1968. When he was a teenager, a car accident broke his windshield and left a serious scar on his forehead. In order to hide these scars, Steven often wears a hat or headscarf.
Music career
Early in his music career, Steven became friends after meeting Bruce Springsteen at the New Jersey club. Later, Van Zandt will perform with Springsteen in bands such as Steelworks and the Bruce Springsteen Band. Although Van Zandt worked in architecture throughout the early 1970s, he always focused on his future music career. After touring with The Dovells, people began to notice Van Zandt wearing a Hawaiian shirt in the winter. This earned him the nickname “Miami Steve”.
In the following years, Van Zandt created bands like Southside Johnny and Asbury Jukes and the Miami Horn. The latter group performed with Bruce Springsteen in 1975 and eventually earned Steven a place in the E Street Band. Bruce later praised Van Zantt for helping develop the signature guitar series in the song “Born to Run.” In the following years, as the E Street Band toured around the world, Steven assumed the role of lead guitar.
In 1984, Steven left the E Street Band, basically claiming that his work was completed.
