Steven Frederic Seagal, born April 10, 1952 in Lansing, Michigan, USA, is of Dutch, English, German, Jewish, and Russian descent, and was a high school math teacher, Samuel Seagal, and his wife, Patricia, a technician. His father died in 1991 and his mother died in 2003. When he was five years old, the family moved to Fullerton, California. He suffered from asthma in his early years, but he made a full recovery after the move. He attended Buena Park High School, from which he was admitted in 1970, before attending Fullerton College.

However, he only spent a year in college before moving to Japan to become a member of the Osaka Aikido Dojo. He returned to the United States in 1974 and met his future wife, Miyako Fujitani. He and Miyako developed a romantic bond, and Steven went with her to Osaka and became an Aikido teacher at a school owned by the Miyako family. Over the next few years, he traveled in and out of Japan until his permanent return to the United States in 1983, where he opened an Aikido dojo in North Hollywood with one of his many students, Haruto Matsuoka, and later moved the studio to West Hollywood. Matsuoka remained a staple of the dojo until the late ’90s, when the two decided to part ways and put Steven in charge.

In 1988, Steven began his acting career as a director, producer and star of the film “Above the Law” as Nico Toscani.
