Steve Aoki is an American musician, record producer and CEO of Dim Mak Records. He specializes in EDM, electro house and dubstep. His recordings include the “Wonderland” and “Neon Future” album series. Aoki was born Steven Hiroyuki Aoki on November 30, 1977 in Miami, Florida. His late father, Rocky Aoki, was a professional wrestler and founder of Benihana Inc. He has siblings Kana and Kevin, and half-sister Devon Aoki. Steve grew up in Newport Beach, where he attended Newport Harbor High School. There, he was part of the badminton team. He went on to study at the University of California, Santa Barbara.

Aoki founded his own record label, Dim Mak Records, in 1996. Headquartered in Los Angeles, California, Dim Mak is also a lifestyle brand and events company. Aoki is a member of the duo “Strange Science”. From 1997 to 2000, he was the lead singer of the punk band This Machine Kills. In October 2007, Thrive Records released Aoki’s first official mixtape “Pillowface and His Airplane Chronicles”. It rose to number 8 on the US Dance/Electronic Albums chart. In November 2009, he released a remix of Drake’s single “Forever”. The song features Drake, Kanye West, Lil Wayne and Eminem.
Aoki’s debut studio album Wonderland was released in January 2012 by Dim Mak and Ultra Records. It was led by the singles “Earthquakey People” featuring Rivers Cuomo and “Ladi Dadi” featuring Wynter Gordon. The project also featured guest artists such as Will.i.am, Kid Cudi, Kay and Travis Barker. Wonderland received a Grammy nomination for Best Dance/Electronic Album. Aoki’s second album, Neon Future I, was released in 2014. The third part of the album is scheduled to be released in 2017.
Aoki made a cameo appearance in the 2013 TV series Arrow. He appeared in the 2014 documentary “The Distortion of Sound” by Jacob Rosenberg. Aoki’s film credits include The Hive (2014), Point Break (2015) and Why Him? (2016). He also voiced the “Robot Chicken” series and the animated film Charming (2017).
